This is part of a series of posts that chronicle the very first game I ever ran. As a first-time Game Master (GM), I am sharing my experience as the story progresses, places are revealed, and events unfold. My hope is that this is entertaining and inspires others to take the reins as a GM for their group.

Elderglen is the oldest city since the world fell. The fall of society. The end of Earth as we knew it. It’s believed to have happened a few hundred years ago, but nobody is around from that time. Every now and then we come across tidbits of information related to The Fall. That’s what we call it in Elderglen. The Fall. We’re not quite sure why or how it happened, but it left nothing but death and destruction. Not much still remains from that time. Anything you can find is either trashed or requires heavy repair. Some have succeeded in re-learning past technology. Others have developed psionic capabilities. Death and destruction are everywhere in The Wilds, the areas outside of well established and defensible townships. Elderglen has stood the test of time and is the longest established township anyone has discovered. It’s vibrant people and booming economy is a testament to the successful growth of Elderglen since The Fall.
Not many people travel outside these walls. No reason to unless you work for the city. A few do head out of the city for supplies, food, diplomacy, anything special the town needs that it can’t get within the walls. Most of everything we need is right inside. Elderglen has been a rock in a sea of chaos. But, even a rock can be moved with enough outside force.
Restlessness has befallen the denizens of Elderglen. When you see the same sights every day, it can drive you mad. Want for expansion and exploration are seeds that have been cultivated within the citizens. Elderglen has almost reached its capacity it’s able to sustain given the resources it can generate, now limited by the population growth. Simply put, this city is getting too big and its seams are showing. It’s about to burst. Something needs to be done.
And so, a new project has been proposed. One that would expand Elderglen into The Wilds and grant the much needed relief of resource restrictions. Sure it’ll take some time, but good things are always worth the wait… right? Project Hope is the city’s last chance at maintaining order before anarchy puts the city in a stranglehold. Our last hope lies in the hands of Isabella Steele and her ability to lead the volunteers tasked with making this project successful. Project Hope. The city’s last hope…
